Toilet Installation Requirements

2023 Dec 30th

Materials and Tools:

  1. Toilet
  2. Wax ring with sleeve
  3. Adjustable wrench
  4. Screwdriver
  5. Level
  6. Shims
  7. Closet bolts
  8. Tank bolts
  9. Plunger
  10. Teflon tape (for threaded connections)

Steps:

1. Gather Materials and Tools: Make sure you have all the necessary materials and tools listed above before starting the installation.

2. Remove the Old Toilet: a. Turn off the water supply to the toilet and flush it to empty the tank and bowl. b. Disconnect the water supply line from the tank. c. Remove the nuts from the closet bolts securing the toilet to the floor. d. Lift the toilet off the closet bolts and set it aside. Remove the old wax ring.

3. Install the Closet Bolts: a. Place the wax ring on the flange (the pipe protruding from the floor). b. Install the closet bolts into the flange, making sure they are parallel to the wall behind the toilet.

4. Set the Toilet: a. Carefully lower the toilet onto the closet bolts and onto the wax ring. Apply even pressure to ensure a good seal with the wax ring. b. Rock the toilet slightly to help it settle on the wax ring.

5. Secure the Toilet: a. Place washers and nuts onto the closet bolts and hand-tighten them. b. Use a wrench to tighten the nuts, alternating sides to ensure even pressure. Be careful not to overtighten and crack the toilet.

6. Install the Tank: a. Place the rubber gasket onto the flush valve opening on the bottom of the tank. b. Lower the tank onto the bowl, aligning the bolts and gasket. c. Install washers and nuts onto the tank bolts and tighten them, again being careful not to overtighten.

7. Connect the Water Supply: a. Connect the water supply line to the fill valve on the bottom of the tank. Use Teflon tape on threaded connections. b. Turn on the water supply and check for any leaks.

8. Level the Toilet: a. Place a level across the bowl and adjust the toilet as needed using shims to ensure it's level.

9. Caulk the Base (Optional): If desired, you can apply a bead of caulk around the base of the toilet to create a neat appearance and prevent odors.

10. Test the Toilet: Flush the toilet several times to ensure proper operation and check for any leaks.

Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions that come with your specific toilet model, as there may be slight variations in the installation process. If you're uncomfortable with any part of the installation, it's always a good idea to consult a professional plumber.
